Rough running. Poor gas mileage 200 1992

My 92 240 wagon runs great sometimes. Have gotten as much as 29 mpg hwy. @ speeds in excess of 70 mph. Lately however, it hasn't been running so well. The ck. eng. lt. comes on & you can almost watch the gas gauge drop. When I pull off the hwy. the eng. runs rough & the ex. smells very rich. While stopped I'll blink out the codes which always indicate some form of running rich. Had the same problem with my 90 240 wagon. More recently, it has taken to occationally stalling @ idle. Recently replaced the crankshaft sensor but to no avail. Checked for gas leaking through the fuel pressure regulator diaphragm, but that's ok.
