Is it safe to hypermile in a manual tranny 200 1986

I recently installed a M46 replacing my auto in my '86 240 sedan. I have found myself when approaching a stop light/sign when doing about 40mph or so, to depress the clutch enough to put the shifter into neutral and come onto the light with plenty of time to either gently stop or put it into 1st or 2nd gear as needed to be on my way. Is this ok to do in the manual or should I just down shift as I approach? Thanks in advance.
