Kickdown cable symptoms to detect failure 700 1989

Have read in the FAQs that a 'clunk' should be heard coming from the transmission itself (AW71L) upon pulling up,then releasing the tension of the cable. However on mine, no 'clunk','clink', nada!
Does this mean that my kickdown cable is worn out? What are the symptoms of a worn out kickdown cable?
My other posts about 'ball trouble' in this same transmission leads me to suspect a messed up kickdown cable instead of worn out 5.5mm plastic balls.
Thanks for any help.
