Cheap ways to get my 240 lower too the ground 200

I'd like to lower my 242 a little bit. I have no desire to slam it to the ground. I'd just like to get a bit closer to modern car height.
IPD's sport springs boast a 1 3/4 in the front and 1 1/4 in the rear. But those cost money...

I'd like to hear from those that have cut some coils off and what they experienced. I have read a lot online of opinions but I find little of "I did it and this is what it was like:"

The truth is I may never be able to justify to my self(or my wife) the $250 price tag. There are just too many other things I want :)

Thanks
