Interesting, because this just came up on TB a week or so ago. The thread subject was removing the crash braces from the body, and of course, the appendix to the rear caliper used to make contact. Those folks are ever trying to lighten their cars or make room for exhaust systems on steroids.

Someone mentioned leaving the casting on the caliper, as it afforded a great lever fulcrum for inserting the pad retaining pins. The OP didn't get it -- because the suggestion was to use a claw hammer, and I think he envisioned beating the pin in from inside. Funny. I've been doing what Ken does, with the added advantage of not having to squeeze the pliers. It works like it was the tool created for the job.

Just last weekend, working with my grandson on his '90, I decided to grab this photo of the act. Notice, only the outer jaw is necessary.



And, yes, the pin was securing a set of used pads pending near future replacement of the rotor and caliper.
