car loses power when accelerating once in a while 1987

I have a 1987 Volvo station wagon 245 with carburetor.
Also has ac that was put in (not factory installed).
Been a great car but occasionally for the past two years plus, the car will suddenly lose power while accelerating on a highway (sometimes with ac running and others times not). The motor does not go off but as I pres on the gas pedal, there is no power. This does not happen often. I usually pull the car off to the side of the road, shut the engine off and wait 10 minutes and then when I start it up again, the symptom goes away. I thought maybe a fuel pump problem or relay for fuel pump. My mechanic isn't sure. Any ideas what this may be. It doesn't happen often at all, but when it does, well not good.
