As for your first question--no there isn't any circumstance other than having a completely broken valve spring (never seen it on a B21F-B230F) that would allow the a valve to drop low enough to hit a piston.
As for your second question--depends on your definition of "reliable". No, no just kidding (well maybe a little serious). We've had many of the original 900 series cars and more recently a 1995 900S and now a 1999 9-3. Write me at---fastforwardphoto(AT)yahoo(DOT)com-----Dave
