Howdy Fellow Bricksters!
It has been a long time, sold my last 850 3 years ago, since then I had one other 850, a 240, and finally a 740 turbo. Well Saturday was my birthday and decided to by myself a treat, a 64 122S with the straightest body you have ever seen! Started right up, but wouldn't shift into gear, after playing with the slave cylinder and seeing it was fine, I decided that the clutch was frozen on the the flywheel. After "unfreezing it" the car was off.
First thing I noticed was the drive shaft was knocking about in the transmission tunnel, the bushings for the center support was gone, after layering on some fuel tubing and a zip tie, that was fixed. Next I drained and refilled the oil in both the trans and the rear end. The trans looked low... The tranny shifts GREAT, but 1st is a little noisy (roars, whines) but second and especially third are LOUD!!! The kicker is 4th gear is so quiet and nice, I could fall asleep. The Rear end wines a lot, sounds like the pinion is worn.
Turning the drive shaft in hand I can hear the rear end and trans make noise, I have been looking around and it seems the center support bearing can be making noise, but I haven't looked at it yet. From what I read, these trannys are built proof, maybe this one was just ran too long on low fluid?
Finally my clutch is slipping when I hit the gas (more then halfway), maybe clutch free play is off? Maybe more likely it's worn. Oh and my Clutch master cylinder sprays me each time I depress the clutch.
So I ask your infinite wisdom, Brickboard. What's up with my transmission?? Also, good place to get a clutch kit, gaskets, bushings, everything! Of course there is IPD and FCP, but any other places?
I found an 1800S transmission with O/D for a good price, what are your guys thoughts on that?
Thanks in advance!
