M46 SYNTHETIC ATF - AMSOIL - REDLINE 200 1980

What does "overfiling" do

This is generally said of the M47.

Here's the deal. Volvo specifies 2.4 qt of lubricant for the M46 but only 1.6 qt for the M47 .

The notion, be it real or imagined, is that Volvo mistakenly placed the fill hole on the M47 gearbox at a lower position than its predecessors and then 'reduced' the amount of lube to save face.

At any rate, the sure way to get 2 qt of lube in the M47 is to raise the left side while filling. Everyone does this and there seems to be no harm in it.

But, 'overfilling' is not necessary with the M46. Just use the recommended amount.
