Tailgate rattle 900 1997

I think this might be a somewhat common problem, tailgate rattle. This is from the lower attachment eyes for the rear panel breaking loose from the tailgate.

This is from the tailgate being allowed to slam shut rather than a minimal impact approach. The noise generated is annoying, and louder than one would think. Fortunately, I only had one eye broken. The trim panel around the inside latch is sacrificially thin, and fifteen years old so its breaking was not unexpected.

I gave this repair a shot and after a 260 mile trip, three weeks running around town, and many tailgate openings and GENTLEclosings. It has not failed yet. How long it will last well that is the real question. If it breaks I will post the obituary.
