142s running poorly at work! 140-160

I do not know the 140's (assuming by your user name it is a '72 142) well at all but a quick check with multimeter will tell you if the battery is charging. You should get a minimum of 13.6V at 1500 rpm...at least 13V at idle (and these two numbers would be low).

Other than that I am not sure what you can easily check on the side of the road.

Fuel filter clogged could allow a carb'ed car to slowly lose power at high speed or under high load (hills).
