Exhaust manifold to downpipe 900

Replacing the gasket between the two items has turned out to be a PIA. First off the angle required to get to the one nut/stud on the firewall side was ridiculous. And despite 3 days of soaking w/PBLaster and liberal use of MAP gas torch...she fought me hard! But I prevailed. Issue #1, the local dealership gave me replacement nuts and studs, but they were wrong size. He said the fact that mine has EGR made a difference...does it(diff size)? Second and more important, one of the nuts crossed on the stud, firmly enough that my loosening brought the entire stud out! Now when I go to put new stud in how will I get it to seat all the way in the manifold before the nut seats on the downpipe? That is to say the nut will easily go the halfway point of the stud BEFORE the stud gets all the way into the manifold, therefore not allowing the stud to seat properly...I could try the two nut together deal but dont wanna beat up the stud...other thoughts?
