Before you loosen one nut, try this.

Take a small Ball Peen hammer and "smack" the end of the shaft that is exposed on the top of the motor - use the "Ball" end of the hammer head. This will drive the shaft down slightly and perhaps provide clearance between the Squirrel Cage and the housing. I am presuming that you have already sprayed WD40 (or whatever) lubricant in the direction of the bearing surfaces.

Finesse and the right size hammer are the mechanics best friends.
