Continuing valve noise(?) saga 700 1988

If the noise is valve train clatter, it will make just as much noise reving it in neutral to 2000 RPM in your driveway, as it will when driving it up a hill with your foot buried to the floor at 2000 RPM – independent of engine load.
If it is making more noise when under a load, then I would suspect a leaky exhaust manifold gasket or pinging.

If it's piston slap, it will normal subside as the engine warms up.

If the noise started immediately after the belt change, then I would double check the timing. Be careful with the cam timing mark, it’s NOT the little round mold mark on the front edge of the rear belt cover. If you’re tall you need to bend over to peak at the mark in the back of the cover.
