Turn wheel, horn stops working; smack wheel- fixes it 700 1990

Hey lovely people.

My horn works fine, so long as I don't turn the wheel. Once I do, it stops working. This has gotten progressively worse over the years. I initially thought it was dirty contacts at the horn, then bad contacts in the buttons, but finally this surfaced. At some point, I checked the connection that feeds from the windshield wiper switch to the horn buttons, and it didn't seem at all suspect.

I have the ABS wheel, and there is a big fat padded spot on the "shaft". I'm not hitting the ring, I'm hitting the soft plastic between the airbag (yikes) and the hard-plastic cover for the cruise/signal/wiper controls.

Smacking the wheel brings the horn back until I turn the wheel at all. I think I should replace the wiring, but don't know how it's routed. Any help?

Cheers
