Odometer hit and miss 200 1983

I have had an odometer problem for a while now and
I recently pulled one at the pull and pay. This morning
I installed the used odometer and it did work for a
few blocks then it stopped working. I read the archives
and decided to remove the o2 sensor trip wire then
it worked again for a block then stopped again.

Another issue that may be causing this hit and miss is that
the lock nut on my speedometer cable is gone/cracked away so when I
put the speedometer cable onto the instrument cluster it is
just kept there by the pressure of the cable and is not
held on by the lock nut that used to be there. The speedometer works
as well as ever, it is just the odometer that is not working well.
Could it be that this cable needs to be held on by the lock nut
to make the odometer function at its best?

Please advise,
Joseph
