walrus3 ,sounds like a good idea to me, the "fuzzie" that you buy nowadays is not quite the same,ie: not as deep but better quality steel insert. I have put a little waterproof adhesive on first, then drilled the holes a little bigger, then bound the lot together with 10lb fishing line,linking them up at the back.
You can use any poundage line you like, the reason I used fishing line was because it is more flexible if you don't get the holes quite it line.
