Unusual rust 200 1991

My father's 245 was exhibiting some rust stains on the rockers - has been for a year or two - so I finally decided to inspect the damage for him, and clean out the rockers.

Naturally I assumed that the rust was coming from severely clogged rockers, holding moisture for long periods. I was wrong; the rockers were spotless inside. The rust started from the outside, around the clips, and the stupid piece of tape that 245s (but not my sedan) have along the seam, held the rust/moisture and allowed the damage to progress.

Following are some photos of the ugly. He's planning to get a paint job soon, so it might be time to break out the welder and some lead.

Have any of you seen this before?
