AM/FM reception - Dipole antenna? 700 1990

Howdy all.
90 740T with some "custom" wiring that I keep finding and fixing.

Long story short, I get no AM reception due to engine/spark noise. This has persisted through 3 different 6141 radios (if it matters, I am using a factor EQ, which is spliced into the feed for the stereo, and I don't think I twisted the power wires together).
I also get fairly ehh FM reception. The stock antenna was broken off years ago, and replaced with some other wire antenna that looks ok, but is nothing I treasure.

I discovered how good reception can be for Dipole antennas, and was thinking about putting one in my car. Has anyone tried it, or does anyone know what I'm talking about?

Other than that, would running a fresh piece of coax cable back to the antenna improve anything? It's not very hard to do, but it would take about an hour or two to keep from breaking plastic bits.

I do use Kingsborne Wirewerks wires, but they're still suppression core wires, and I don't remember other wires making my reception any better.

Happy Bricking
Will
