timing belt broke-now going to replace

in reading through instructions on the FAQ section/the mikeponte.com writeup, it says to not turn the crankshaft or camshaft while the timing belt is removed. in order to get the engine to TDC i am going to have to turn them but since the belt is broke am i going to do damage? if so, what course of action should i take?
