1984 Volvo 244 suddenly won't start - new battery 200

We got a new battery for our 244 about a month or so ago. So I know it's not that. Also, we have new spark plugs in the car (well mostly new - we couldn't get 2 of the old ones out - but the old ones we did take out were STILL GOOD, so I'm confident that leaving them in was fine).

Just to be certain, we tried charging the battery - it almost started, but then peetered out.

I have NO CLUE what's going on and don't want to deal with this as we just got done having to take it in to the shop for the headlight switch replacment.

What would a faulty starter sound/be like...any symptoms 'signs' to preclude that?

Are there any fuses I should be checking??
