Intermittent odometer 700

I've noticed the last two weeks or so my trip and regular odometer have been intermittently working.....some times it does, but sometimes its not. Most times when its warmer out its been working but in the mornings and colder days it seems to be struggling...

Its a 1989 740 so I was wondering if this is a sign its going to go completely?

I've heard the 26 tooth gear is the one to get for the repair (VDO gauge) but wouldn't the odometer just quit completely if the gear wore out or does the on and off seem right for a failing gear?

Thx..
