# 60 would be the 4th gear switch for the overdrive.
As I stated earlier, the reverse light switch on the M45/46/47 is located on the lefthand side of the gearbox top cover. In this diagram a plug for the threaded opening is shown instead of the switch.
I only just noticed that there are two such plugs depicted in this diagram, both identified by # 55. It makes sense to show it in the case of the 4th gear switch since the M45 will not have that item. It makes no sense to show it and only it in place of the reverse light switch since all cars should have that feature.
Nearly the same diagram appears in publication TP30056/2. It contains the same error. But on page 7 of the same publication there is another diagram of the assembled gearbox and it's peripheral items (bell housing, drive flange, etc) and it clearly shows the switch and identifies it as such.
It also clearly shows the ring gasket that goes under the switch.
I reiterate that it makes me angry that the gasket is supposed to be there and yet it seems to be the cause of this problem.
I don't discount machine man's or your advice to try it again without the gasket.
But I still wonder if the present switch is losing it's function. Perhaps a new switch with the gasket would work.
There's only one way to find out. And if the problem persists, back to no gasket with some reliable sealant.
I will keep your Permatex product suggestion in mind.
