Strut mount bump stop...are they necessary? 700 1992

Am replacing the strut inserts on daughter's 1992 745. I bought 2 new KYB bump stops since hers were non-existant. However, they will not fit down enough on the shaft to allow the big nut to go onto the top of the strut insert(also KYB). Should I trim them enough to allow the nut to fit or just eliminate them altogether?
If I leave them off, will that shorten the life of the KYB inserts?
Thanks for any help.
