1992 240 "grinding' sound - water pump or power steering pump? 200

My son's 240 has a pretty nasty grinding sound coming from the area of the power steering pump. I notice the water pump is leaking a bit and am wondering if what I am hearing is, in fact, a dieing water pump and not the power steering pump at all. Is this a symptom of the former or the latter? I have never had a PS pump go south on me before...
