Uncle catfish,
You have my most sincere and deepest condolences for your terrible losses.
Here's hopes your are able to find a new pal presses in Swedish steel, iron, and aluminum metal alloys very soon.
Agreed with you and Uncle Onkel Udo II. I feel the nineteen seventies model 240s were more bullet proof. I like how the body feels and sounds as the B21 F (or E) takes up drive through the M45/46.
Somehow it seemed more rewarding to mechanically rehab that 1976 242 DL, 1975 244 DL, 1979 242 GT (a missed beloved and all the pals that rode with or drove me in it), and the 1979 245 DL with rod knock from a bad engine rebuild directed by the University Foreign Car owner in MO in the late 1980s.
You can scan the nearby craigslist and those in the more distant large eastern cities. Craigslist balks and rebukes search engines, yet, in the google boolean string vernacular, format your google search using the string:
"Volvo 240" site:craigslist.org
or, be more specific to locate more vintage or more specific models -
"Volvo 242" site:craigslist.org
and
"Volvo 245" site:craigslist.org
Google responds, usually, if the site knows your location via your POP, with nearby sites. Craigslist responds with a balk of directing some result entries to their index of expired listings. Different search engines use different search string operator vernacular.
You can search ebay, too, for hopefully nearby models in the Atlantic Northeast.
Maybe someone on the brickboard or turbobricks has a for sale sign on a model your like near you.
You can also go to those craigslist sites, perform a search, and bookmark the search results, thusly.
(All of NYC including Queens, of course, where you are. The search is for "Volvo 240" searching title and body in the nyc.craigslist.org. The results show hits for 240s)

(The baltimore craigslist. The search is for "Volvo 240" searching title and body in the baltimore.craigslist.org. May want to contact Uncle Art Benstein for used Volvo 240s as he is near Baltimore.)

Your can seek other craigslist locations at (http://www.craigslist.org/about/sites).
Other auto seeking sites like cars.com, edmunds.com, and some others. Various craigslists and ebay may be your best bet.
I hope this helps to find your a new companion in Swedish alloys. Yet please allow yourself some time to mourn a bit. Clear out the history and organize what Volvo 240 stuff your have (tools, parts, photos) and direct the energy towards your new 1979 245.
Good luck and hopes you and yours have had and are having some super swell holidays!
Please don't go sticking nylon rope into a cylinder to seize the engine when removing the crank pulley. All counterhold tools are available for all models of OHC four cylinder Volvo engines from SPX Tools (official vendor of Volvo OEM tools) and from Tasca (very near you and fast and cheapest!) Volvo for OEM tools.
Your probably know all this already. Just trying to help. So hope that helps.
Questions?
Luck and best wishes!
