I posted a vague message the other day asking for help passing the CA smog test, but I did not include enough details.
The car is a 1984 240, LH 2.0, B230F engine (transplanted), M46 transmission. Chassis has over 500K miles, engine about 300K miles.
It passed NOX, but failed with high HC and extremely high CO (4+ times the max allowed). Prior to taking the test, the oil and filter were changed (guessing about 5,000 miles on the old oil) and the car was driven 70 miles on the freeway.
The catalytic converter and air mass meter were replaced to pass the last smog in 2010. Also replaced at that time were the plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor, and air filter. Car has been driven only 8,000 miles in the last two years.
Other symptoms: When the engine is cold (first start of the day), it runs like crap. Has an uneven, lumpy idle....chug, chug, chug, chug. If you give the car gas, it stumbles and the tach drops well below 500 rpm, but it doesn't die. After running for 5 or so minutes, the idle evens out and the car drives normally.
Also, during the "warm up" period, there is some kind of black crud coming out of the tailpipe. Enough to leave a stain on the cement a few feet behind the car. I can't tell if it is carbon or oil - although the car does not use any oil and almost never needs to be topped off. During this time, the exhaust also smells like raw gas. Again, after the car warms up, the exhaust cleans up and the deposits (or whatever they are) stop.
So far, I have replaced the oxygen sensor. The car seems to be more responsive when it's warmed up, but the weird cold start situation continues.
Air mass meter? It's only two years old but you never know with reman parts.
