Sudden Rod Knock? 1993

Group, I hope 2012 has gone well for each of you. Suddenly, today my 1993 B230F engine (205k mi) developed a loud "rod knock" noise. As I pulled away from a stop light near home, a sudden loud clanking noise emanated from the engine compartment. It was louder on acceleration or under load.

I did a lot of troubleshooting after consulting the invaluable Brickboard archives and determined the noise would go away after pulling the spark plug wire from #2 cylinder. The oil and coolant are clean.

I've had this engine for 3 years. It came from a running 240 which I transplanted into my 1992 940. I can't vouch for the first 175k miles on this engine, but it has been well taken care of for the past 30k miles.

I am just surprised how suddenly this clanking noise came about. Are there any other possibilities to consider before I condemn this engine and begin the search for another?

Thanks.
