How about a 164 with a B20? 140-160

You want the B30 engine in a 164.

The B30 engine is a classic inline six design of relentless durability chock full of torque. With the (Borg and Beck?) M410 four speed + overdrive in a 164 is a real cruiser with pretty okay MPG. The Borg-Warner 35 (BW35) automatic is quite heavy and inefficient if durable with care.

Kind of ticks me off Volvo never produced an OHC (over head cam) inline six engine. You know. B20 is to B21 as B30 is to B32?

That's a Porsche engine in that 960/S90/V90.

The Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection, if so equipped, is not hard to understand and repair. Pay attention to the fuel line sections between the fuel rail and the injector. The fuel line may be old and cranked or prior owners / mechanic over tighten the hose clamps. Check the hose clamps often. Probably not as much an issue with the new material used to make fuel line and new hose clamp designs. All parts are available with replacement aftermarket controllers of varying quality and such.

If equipped with carburetors and not injection, somewhat the simpler.

You may want to replace all rubber fuel lines with new to be able to use the questionable E-15 fuel mix. AAA put out articles that E15 may damage cars older than 2012 manufacture save for Flex Fuel vehicles.

As already stated by other respondents to your thread, if you can't use the B30 engine, you can swap in the B20 with all systems that came with it. The swap may be difficult, yet not impossible. As for mating it with the 164, well, other will have more recent insight than I have. You already know to use lighter springs, like those from a 145 wagon (heaviest), 144 sedan, or 142 coupe (lightest). The 164 front end is around 90-150 or so pounds heavier then the 140 front end. Maybe more. Not sure.
