Sudden Rod Knock? 1993

I pulled the head off today and found that the head gasket between cylinders #1 and #2 had a piece missing. See photo at: http://tinyurl.com/b6kqgjh

This explains the lack of compression in cylinders #1 and #2.

Could it explain the clanging/knocking noise too??

I turned the crank and pressed down on the piston #2 and there was no looseness. Is there a better way to test the integrity of the lower engine without removing the oil pan?

Thanks in advance.
Phil
