starting problems on volvo 240 1987, starter solenoid? 200 1987

Hello brickboarders, I have an 89 240 that has had alot of trouble starting. for a while I thought it was the solenoid as I would bang on it and after a while it would start. However Ive been banging on it alot and still no start. Today I wired it directly to the battery and it just whirred around but did not start the car. does this mean the solenoid is ok and the problem is elsewhere? Please help!
