Where should temp gauge sit? 200 1990

I just got the AC regassed in my 1990 240, and it works great after not being used for 2 or more years. However, I noticed that the temp gauge is now climbing from its normal average of about 1/3 of the way up the dial without AC, to half way or just over with the AC on in traffic or on hills. Outside it's about 90F. The temp gauge compensation board is bypassed, and I can still just about put my hand around the top radiator hose without getting burned when it's half way up the dial. So my question is, where should the temp gauge sit? I'm leaning towards getting a new radiator, 87 degree stat and hoses, but maybe this is normal/harmless temperature variation. Temp compensation boards were probably invented to stop people like me from worrying...
