distributor harness substitute 700 1987

The distributor harness on my 86 240 looks suspiciously like the harness on my 87 740. The harness on my 740 is pretty much held on with light rtv sealant, as 23 years if under hood living has made it untenable, so I have been trolling for a newer harness and unable to find a direct replacement.
My thought is three wires is three wires, as long as no wires get crossed in the process. The question I have is this.
The OEM 740 wire uses a braided shield as the ground wire. Is there any harm marrying it up to a simple stranded wire.
I'm sure I can find a 240 harness, that isn't in the last stages of dissolving.
Thanks as always
Paul
