740 speedometer no longer working 700 1991

Hello to all.
I have been driving my 1991 740 sedan for several months with the speedometer/odometer not work. Previously I pulled the electrical plug at the differential's speed sensor, and rebuilt the connections at the plug. The wiring really needed that attention. The speedo and odo began working again albeit some what enthusiastic at times. That whole bouncing around thing. Now another complete failure.
Do I need to purchase a rebuilt speedo head unit? Should I sent mine in to be rebuilt?
Any suggestions?
