When to Replace Throttle Cable 200

The plastic sheathing on the outside of my throttle cable is peeling/flaking off near the spool. Is this a sign of imminent failure, or is everyone on here driving thousands of miles with "sheath-less" throttle cables? As far as I know, it hasn't been replaced in ~300k miles. Just trying to get a gauge on the life expectancy of this thing..
