Unless you are in the habit of running your tank low on gas you may have had one of those two legged animals that suck the life out of your car, with a hose.

Got any driving teenagers in the neighborhood?

Was the gauge not working or just reading low? These pumps do not take it kindly to running low on gas.

Running out of gas on the highway can " suck " as bad as running out in your own driveway.

Stay out of the orange band on the gauge as that low of level is only an estimate at any time of what is in the tank.
