Palmer, My wife and I have owned many Volvos and Saabs. We've had a number of the original 900 series--S and Turbo and of the modern transverse motor type--a '95 900S and currently a '99 9-3 (2.0 litre w/turbo). I would only own a version of this car with an actual Saab motor. The V6 is a GM motor and at some point into the 2000's the 4 cylinder was switched to a GM motor as well.
I love the auto tranny in these cars--light years ahead of the BW35 that came in the original 900--three modes-normal, winter and sport (which I like best). Before selling it the 900S had over 160k miles. The '99 had 108k when we bought it--now 170k. Both transmissions were/are flawless. Both motors use/d no oil between changes (I use synthetic, 5k miles). Mechanically they are very solid. A friend with a Saab specialty shop does the timing chain as maintenence at 250k+. Yes, a chain, not a belt.
They handle well enough for 7/10ths driving--no better or worse than the Volvo 700/900 series--same result as Volvo for more enthusiastic driving--lots of lean and understeer. They ride pretty hard at slow speed. Highway driving is relaxed and smooth. MPG?--around 22-25 local--27-30 on the road with the turboed 9-3.
Expect front end work at 150k+. Easy enough to work on--buy new lower control and stabilizer arms. (see Rock Auto for best prices and availability) Original strut shocks and upper mounts are very good.
The seats--w/lumbar--are good but not as good as Volvo. Interior is narrow--especially compared to 700/900 Volvo. Two broad shouldered people in front will bang elbows all the time. Visibility to the rear--4 door hatchback----excuse the expression--sucks. The glove box is almost useless except for the owners manual and a pair of gloves. We have the base A/C -- works very well.
