External HG Coolant Leak

I'm really just a partswapper type of DIY'er, I'm afraid and a HG swap is an awfully big job for me that would require some courage to entertain. Just one question. Did you have the head checked and/or milled?

My engine has never overheated. With that in mind, if I ever elect to do the HG, could I just slap a HG on?
