Has anyone rebuilt an M46?

My '84 245 has 332,000 miles on it and the M46 has never been rebuilt. I have owned the car since new and I have changed the transmission fluid every other year, or about every 25,000 miles.

It makes some noise in 3rd gear and sometimes it is a bitch to shift into 1st (fiddling with the reverse detent plate did not help). Otherwise it shifts surprisingly well for being almost 30 years old.

I suspect that at some point in the not-too-distant future, it will need to be overhauled. Has anyone attempted this? I know that junkyard boxes are plentiful but that will not always be the case, and why not fix what I have if the box is serviceable.

Does anyone have higher mileage on an original M46....any particular mileage that they are known to blow up?
