Coolant level 1 gallon low! 900 1994

I take care of friend's '94 945. She told me the heat has not been working in the car for the past week. I take a look and see that a plug in the top part of the radiator had blown out (this the hole for the unused temperature sensor).

The temperature gauge showed normal temperature. I replaced the plug and it took 1 gallon of coolant to bring it to the proper level! I did not see any negative effects from running with this low coolant level - anything I should look for?

I used a new expansion plug and wired it to stay put. I wish I had something a little more permanent feeling -- any suggestions?

Thanks.
