Where are you located? Your profile says AL, but you mention New England.

Hard starting is abusive to your battery, and a poorly charged battery causes hard starting.

Before we get into the chicken and the egg -

How well do you maintain your brick?

Old fan belts, dirty battery connections, worn tune up parts, a dirty air filter, a dirty fuel filter, valves out of adjustment, dirty injectors, etc. etc cause starting problems and battery problems.

All of our Volvos started easily after we owned them for a year or so, I always kept them near stage 0.

I recommend taking your car to a dealer before you throw a lot of parts at it.
