123GT "beauty rings / wheel covers': How to use without damaging? 120-130

Anyone successfully REMOVE hubcaps installed over the rather rare GT metal wheel covers - without damaging the wheel covers?

When I found my GT, it still had the (aluminum?) wheel covers. They were pretty beat up - and now I can see why: the outside perimeter of the hubcap serves to hold down the center of the covers. If one is not thinking (or does not know the "trick") the wheel covers are easily dented when prying off the hubcap, as it APPEARS one must pry against the cover.

Any experience doing this without damaging the covers?

Certainly, the simplest way to avoid damaging them is to hang them on your garage wall, rather than mount them on the wheels - but what is the fun of that? :)

Suggestions?

Thank you,
