intermediate shaft on a 740? 700 1987

I thought for a change i'd look before i leap, and scout out what is laying in wait for me from the wife's 87 740.
This car is the very embodiment of "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie."
So I Imagine if it needs an harmonic balancer, it probably needs a timing belt, and as long as i'm in there I might as well do the crank seal ( i can see a small leak from it).
My first question is, as the distributor is driven off the cam on the back of the motor, why does all of the information, pictures, tutorials still show me an intermediate shaft, if all it does is spin the distributor?
Belts are the same for my 86 240 dl as the 87 740. I have spare belts for my 240's.
Second question, is there any "big deal" to changing the front crank shaft seal?
Thanks as always
Paul
