Engine tries to stall from shifting D to N & N to R 200 1991

I just bought this 91 240 wagon about two weeks ago.
I noticed that When I shift from D to N & N into R the
engine tries to stall out. No problems starting or shifting
into gears. What could this be?

91 245 GL with 228k
