Thanks Matt. I recently got another car of similar vintage, so I'll take your advice on getting a basic education in electrical diagnostics. It will no doubt come in handy.

In terms of Kragen, they charged the battery fully -- which took an hour, because it was totally drained -- and then ran some tests on it with some kind of machine they had in the back of the shop. So I think it was pretty thorough. I would imagine it would have been a lot easier for them to have sold me a new battery, as they didn't charge anything for the test. So they sent me away with a fully charged battery and the car fired right up.
