Hello Board,

I've got a 1966 122s with a B18 as a DD and lately I've been noticing a whistling noise coming from the engine after it warms up. The whistle seems to remain constant in pitch over all engine speeds and is present during idle when the car is stopped (so it's not the driveshaft bearing/ujoints/rear diff). Under initial loading from a stop it does seem to cut out, but I don't know if that's an allusion caused by the engine making more noise drowning out the whistle. I've also noted that the oil coating on the engine block is substantially thicker than normal and is mostly present below the head/block split line (area around spark plugs, valve cover, and exhaust/intake area of the head seem to be relatively dry). Judging by the oil presence it seems I need a new head gasket, but could the head gasket also be causing the whistling or do I have more searching to do?

As a side note, when checking the oil dipstick there does not appear to be any water in the oil and the head bolts appear to be within spec limits (about 66lb-ft judged by when the torque wrench didn't just click when force was applied to the bolts external to the valve cover).
