How to replace voltage regulator? 200

Noooobeeee here, pls b patient :)
I'm hoping to get '88 245 running again. 'Logic' told me to replace alternator, my local parts guy felt voltage regulator is likely the culprit. He ordered voltage regulator, a Hella, for me on a Friday, and store was closed Monday (apparently another victim of our economy). His comment was 'it's only held in by 2 screws and it's so easy to replace even you could do it.' (You can tell he has resounding faith in my abilities - lol!)
Since I couldn't get the part he ordered, I ordered a Bosch (price wasn't that much more.) Now that it's here, what now?? Does alternator have to be removed to replace regulator? (I've read comments about 'brushes' - are those built into alt. or reg. - or do I need those also?) I also ordered 3 alternator bushings and bolt - if I don't need them it's not a big deal. If I do need them, I'll have them. (BIG problem with this parts store closing).
Should I have alternator tested? (If so, before or after regulator is installed and battery reconnected?) I don't want to chance losing battery and/or regulator!
I also ordered alternator belt (10x920). Would it be too much to replace belt as well? (I have a friend who volunteered to help me...but I don't want to take advantage; he said he'd reconnect battery and replace regulator).
BTW, why are the belts usually sold as a set? (I did find at least one online parts supplier that sells them by the each.)
Online vendors sell as 10x918, and 10x920 and fitment indicators say they BOTH are correct fit for 1988 240/245 but they give no further detail. (I bought 10x920.)
Tools needed?
Thanks for any feedback!
