anyone bypass the primer (intank) pump in a '79 240 series 200 1979

just wondered if anyone did this. my 1979 245 has a bad primer fuel pump in the tank. I read in the repair manualthat in '76 and '77 240 models some had no in tank pump the supply ine just ran to the forward pump. I was thinking about replaceing the bad in-tank pump with a section of line so teh forward pump could draw the gas straight out of the tank and not have to draw it through the first one?
comments? just not wanting to put too much into it as it is a "spare" car.
my primary car is a '67 Amazon that runs fine.
