V90 running rough with check engine code P0117 engine coolant temp circuit low input; S90-V90

I replied to an incomplete 900 post and I want this to be on the S90-V90 forum as well.

OK so I had this same error "P0117 engine coolant temp circuit low input" yesterday on the way to work ( I keep a scanner in my car just in case...)

I took a gamble and bought the sensor from O'Riely as they could have it by early afternoon for ~ $35. The sensor is hidden under the thermostat (it requires a 19mm wrench to replace it) The thermostat housing was in the way so I had to remove it to replace the sensor (this requires a torx socket. The thermostat uses a rubber gasket so I believe you can reuse it ( I did after cleaning the metal surfaces) but if I had known it was coming off in advance I would have replaced the thermostat and gasket at the same time just because you have to get in there anyway....

Our cars really need that coolant temperature sensor to run properly . After I picked the part up the engine would barely restart when warm. Also the radiator fans were running after I shut off the car in 40 deg F weather (Not normal) so I think the car runs too hot when this sensor is malfunctioning. Another symptom was the engine cranked twice as long to start when cold.

BL- I don't recommend driving the car much with this problem.

I cleared the code and the car appears fixed, and I will report back if the fix is not permanent. I hope this helps somebody out in the future.

Take Care,

Will
