940 Turbocharger failure-How will it run w/o repairing it? Repair options?

Have had three n/a redblocks previously,bought my first turbo eight months ago at 188,000, a 1994 940. Fun car to drive.

Last week, with 214,000, noticed leakage of an odd brown fluid from a small split in the hose under the coolant reservoir, alerting me to oil in the coolant, presumably from the turbo.

Almost simultaneously the car has acceleration problems,very sluggish. My local indy mechanic, a reliable Volvo guy, diagnoses a failed turbo, and says the best replacement he can find so far is a used one(no warranty) for $300, plus labor.

I have fixed the coolant hose leak. Several questions, most urgent of which is, can I continue to drive it routinely with a dead turbo? If I can drive it long term w/o turbo repair, I may do so while I figure out my nest step.

Next question, since the body and interior of the car are in very good shape, what is my best turbo option if I decide to repair? It strikes me that installing a junkyard part is risky, and may be more expensive in the long run,

Fianlly, how difficult is it to DIY? I'm not completely inept, having done brakes, fuel pumps,and other simple repairs, but have always hated doing exhausts, heads,etc, inevitably breaking studs, or getting into spaces that seem too cramped to manipulate tools.

I have a concern that the oil/coolant mixture might migrate into the engine, with catastrophic results, If not, I am tempted to continue to drive it w/o turbo repair. Experience, thoughts, suggestions?
